Path of Fire: Piecing Together the Histories of Balthazar, Kralkatorrik, and Palawa Joko

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR GUILD WARS 2 AND LIVING WORLD PERSONAL STORY, AS WELL AS THE STORY FROM THE NOVELS.

With the reintroduction of former bigwigs in Path of Fire, and as Story and Setting Week comes to a close, we’re going to review the big players we’ll be up against in Elona. Namely, Balthazar, who we saw is heading to that continent; Palawa Joko, the closest thing to a ruler that Elona has; and Kralkatorrik, the Elder Dragon who will awaken again, bringing widespread chaos whether he ends up dying or not.

Balthazar

He first appeared as one of The Six in 10,000 BE. As the god of war and fire, Balthazar encouraged humans to battle for superiority over all the other races. Though the needlessly complicated way he came back in Living World season 3 is questionable, the question of why can be easily understood. Balthazar wants to lead an army to victory over the world, and humanity has disappointed him thus far.

His emergence and his personal history is written in legend. Balthazar’s return is like a second Coming, and those that believed in him see it as Judgment Day. However, Balthazar is no ordinary god. He doesn’t spare believers; if victory were guaranteed, the only people that have a chance of making it through Balthazar’s Judgment Day are his soldiers.

10,000 BE: Balthazar emerges as one of the Six human gods

0 AE: The Six leave Tyria, seemingly forever

1329 AE: Balthazar returns in Living World Season 3

Palawa Joko

In the eighth century AE, Joko began his assault on Elona, but didn’t have his first big success until over one hundred years later. Being an undead lich and therefore mostly immortal will definitely give a man some patience. Literally two years later, Turai Ossa wins a battle against him and then establishes the Order of Whispers, using it to magically lock him away–the most they could do to protect Elona.

Kourna, a province of Elona, made Turai Ossa their warmarshal. They were so grateful to him that they made the position nepotistic–every Kourna warmarshal after Turai would be his direct descendant. Over 200 years later, Varesh Ossa, an otherwise great warmarshal, deliberately brings about Nightfall which comes close to freeing the rebellious and destructive human god Abaddon. There are other unintended effects of Nightfall, including weakening the magic that binds Palawa Joko. He is freed.

In 1135, Joko uses his army of the Awakened to conquer Elona. Starting and since then, he’s forced the residents to accept him as their leader.

757 AE: Palawa Joko makes his first appearance in Tyrian history when he builds the Bone Palace in Elona and begins his attempts to conquer it.

860 AE: His first successful conquering of an Elonian province, Vabbi. Earns the name “The Scourge of Vabbi.”

862 AE: Turai Ossa and the Order of Whispers defeat him and seal him off.

1075 AE: Palawa Joko is freed during Nightfall.

1135 AE: Palawa Joko rallies his army to conquer Elona, and continues his reign to the present day (1330 AE).

Kralkattorik

Kralkatorrik is an Elder Crystal Dragon who last awoke five years before the Guild Wars 2 personal story begins. His minions are the Branded. He woke up with the intent to kill one of his champions who had turned against him, Glint. Though Destiny’s Edge tried to protect her, Kralkatorrik succeeded in killing her, and was also able to escape. He resided in the Crystal Desert and restricted entrance to Elona up until the events of Living World season 3. Now he’s flown off and is thought to be heading toward another region in Elona, possibly Vabbi.

1320 AE: Kralkatorrik awakens. He battles Destiny’s Edge and kills Glint. He escapes to the Crystal Desert.

1330 AE: Kralkatorrik moves somewhere else, leaving Elona open for players to enter in Path of Fire.
